Lot description

Mercury-gilded bronze. Dial with Roman numerals.
Paris movement. Signed Robert Robin (1742 - 1799). Robin became a master clockmaker in 1767 and was clockmaker to King Louis XVI and to Napoleon when he was consul.
This work depicts Aristides, an Athenian statesman. Ancient historians, including Herodotus and Plutarch, bestowed upon him the title of "the Just", as they portrayed him as an honest and ethical person in the government of Athens. In 482 BC he was accused of alleged sympathy with the Persians and was exiled. It is said that in the assembly where the condemnation of Aristides was to be deliberated, an illiterate voter asked him, not knowing that he was addressing Aristides directly, to write his name on the ballot. Aristides, true to his principles and his goodness, did what the voter asked, thus condemning himself to exile. At the base of the clock there is a bas-relief depicting the scene of Aristides' assembly, when the illiterate voter puts his ballot into the ballot box.
In running order. Hours and half-hours chiming.
The key is missing.
48.5 x 37.5 x 14 cm.
