Cataloguing note:
Thomas Rauch comes from an important saga of luthiers specialised mainly in violins, violas and violas d'amore. His teachers were his father Sebastian Rauch, and Thomas Edlinger. There is not much information about his life, but it is known that during the mid 18th century he was active in Prague, and later moved to Prussian Silesia (present-day Poland), in the city of Breslau. His instruments are characterised by a very deep timbre, well-treated wood, and genuinely high bows.
Pieces by this craftsman can be found in public collections, one of them a viola d'amore in the Wit Museum in Leipzig.
