Lot description

Oil on canvas.
On the back there is information written on the canvas about the sitter and about the date when the work was painted.
Signed "Fischer p." and dated on the lower left corner, which is barely visible.
The pictorial quality of the work, in Biedermeier style, clearly suggests that the sitter belonged to a well-to-do family. Carl Friederich Marcus Semmel (1779-1869) was an important merchant in his home town of Gera. His son, Carl Moritz Semmel, became a high administrative official and a well-known German politician.
70.5 x 56.5 cm; 84 x 69 cm (frame).
